Saxton Pope 's Notes of Interest

  • Surgeon, university medical instructor, bowhunter, and archery writer. His writings established the bow as a suitable and humane sporting weapon
  • National Archery Association Flight Champion, 1921, 22
  • Pioneered archery as a recreational hunting sport in the U.S., along with friend Art Young, in the early 20th Century
  • Befriended Ishi, the last survivor of the Yana tribe of California. Ishi shared the Yana secrets of crafting bows and arrows and methods of shooting and hunting with Pope. Included these insights in his famous book, Hunting with the Bow & Arrow, published in 1923.
