- Ed made his first bow out of osage with a stainless steel handle, under the guidance of Ford Hopkins. In 1962, he shot the first perfect animal round in NFAA history and in 1963, won the NAA National Target Championship. He also captured a Ben Pearson Open Championship along the way.
- In 1982, Ed became the first archer in Professional Archers Association history to win every major sanctioned tournament held in one year. These events included Atlantic City, Las Vegas and the PAA Indoor and Outdoor Nationals. That feat in and of itself speaks to his dominance.
- In his home state of Iowa, Ed took first place in the Iowa Games nine times, first place in the State Indoor seven times, first place in the State Outdoor Target Championship fifteen times and the State Field Championship fifteen times. He also topped the Midwestern Field on four separate occasions.
- In 1988, Ed was named Iowa Sportsman of the Year.
Nineteen ninety three marked his induction into the Iowa Hall of Fame. He was a charter member in the PAA and ranked as the Number One male competitor five years in a row. During these milestone events, he also shot as a member of the Hoyt Team Staff for fifteen years.
